I Am Canada: Graves of Ice
$14.95 Add to cartA dramatic Arctic adventure set during Sir John Franklin’s doomed search for the Northwest Passage
George Chambers is a fourteen-year-old aboard HMS Erebus, one of two ships under the command of Sir John Franklin on his quest to discover the Northwest Passage. But when the Erebus and Terror are trapped in crushing ice, 129 men of the crew die from cold, scurvy, and starvation.
Only two remain alive when George begins to recount his story: himself and Commander James Fitzjames. As his strength dwindles and starvation weakens him, George recalls the events that led him to Canada’s desolate North, and the expedition’s failure — including gravediggers, a close call with a polar bear, standing up against sailors threatening mutiny, and his own impending death.
George does not know whether the story he tells will be all that survives of Franklin’s doomed Arctic expedition.

Emily Carr At the Edge of the World
$25.95 Add to cartThe brilliant artist Emily Carr lived at the edge. When she was born, in 1871, Victoria, British Columbia was a small, insular place. She was at the edge of a society that expected well-bred young ladies to marry. For years, she was at the edge of the world of artists she longed to join.
Emily Carr’s life was not an easy one. She struggled against a family that did not approve of her art and against poor health. She found her pleasures in her many pets – a Javanese monkey named Woo, parrots, and many beloved dogs. Later, she would meet the artists of the Group of Seven and among them find her soul mates.
When illness put a stop to her painting, she found expression and comfort in her writing. Her book Klee Wyck received Canada’s highest literary honor – the Governor General’s Award.
Emily Carr: At the Edge of the World is an introduction to this remarkable artist and her paintings.
